HOW DID THE TASTE OF TACOMA® GET STARTED?

The Taste of Tacoma® has delivered free family fun to the citizens of Tacoma for over three decades! The Taste was started in 1986 byFestivals Inc. CFO and local restaurateur, Alan Silverman after the Tacoma Restaurant Association requested he create an event for the Tacoma community just as he had done with the Bite of Seattle®, which he launched successfully in 1982. A restaurateur himself, Al (as he is called), was dedicated to creating 'the ultimate family picnic.' The principals in which he created the event over 30 years ago still holds true today; promote the local food, beverage, and restaurant industry while offering the public a chance to taste a wide variety of foods at affordable prices - all of this in a magnificent setting like beautiful Point Defiance Park.

WHAT DOES THE POINT DEFIANCE VISITORS CENTER INCLUDE?

Located in the historic Point Defiance Lodge the Visitors Center was built in 1898 as the house of the Park District’s first Superintendent Ebenezer Roberts and his family. The Visitors Center is the hub for park tours, presentations and unique experiences. A wide-ranging schedule of visitor-oriented activities takes place throughout summer in Point Defiance Park.

New this year, various types of Point Defiance gear will be available for purchase. From hoodies to beanies to t-shirts, there is something for everyone. Grab a Point Defiance Junior Ranger Program activity booklet. Completing just 6 pages and reciting the Junior Ranger Pledge will earn you a Junior Ranger pin.

For more adventure, grab a 'That's the Point' field guide and collect codes from hidden signs throughout the park. Collect all the codes and receive coupons and prizes.

The Visitors Center also offers free and fee-based programing experiences including Ranger-led nature hikes, garden tours, coffee with the birds, Tacoma giants, forest mindfulness and living history presentations.
